TO HELP AVOID FROZEN PIPES THIS WINTER
• Cover tanks and interior/exterior plumbing pipes with insulation.
This is one of the most efficient ways to protect your pipes from freezing. It works by wrapping insulating materials around the pipes and is particularly effective for those domestic interior pipes located in exposed and unheated areas of the home. These exposed pipes are at greater risk of freezing so the more insulated they are, the better protected they’ll be.
• Wrap heat tape around exposed pipes and ensure your loft insulation is in good condition.
• Make sure you heat your home while you’re away. It is recommended to put your central heating on a timer for a few hours each day at 55°F.
• Circulate warm air around your home to help prevent pipes located in the walls from freezing. Keep kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open when you can and cover any small gaps in the walls.
• Regularly check your water pressure during the winter months. The first sign of a frozen pipe is restricted water flow.
• Check that you can turn off your water main valve in a burst pipe emergency (usually located under the kitchen sink).
